Nobody plans the hallway. The sitting room gets the sofa deliberations, the bedroom gets the paint charts. And the spaces in between keep the builder's pendant they came with. Which is odd, because the entrance, the landing and the corridor are the rooms guests see first and you see most: a dozen times a day, every day, usually under the worst light in the house.
The good news is that these rooms are inexpensive to finish, because light is most of what they need. No new furniture, no redecorating: one considered fitting per space, each one replacing what is already on the ceiling or the wall point. Here are the five, in the order we would do them, every one drawn from our hallway lighting edit.
1. The entrance hall: the three-second first impression
The entrance is judged before a coat comes off. A semi-flush fitting is the right instrument: enough drop to feel intentional, not so much that it argues with the front door. Fluted glass earns its keep here: the ribs turn one bulb into a pattern of warm light across the walls and ceiling, so a small space feels dressed rather than merely lit.

Landings sit under the roofline, so the fitting needs to hug the ceiling and stay calm. A slim disc with a warm wood-tone rim does both: it warms the most-walked few square metres in the house without ever meeting a stretched arm or a suitcase. If your hallway has a mirror or a console table, light it from the wall instead of the ceiling. A wall light at head height flatters the mirror, deepens the paint colour and turns a corridor into a room in its own right. More of them live in our wall lights edit. Around 1.5 to 1.7 m from the floor puts it at eye level. It is also a kinder light to walk past on the way out of the door.
Rule of thumb
Beside a mirror, place the wall light so the glow lands on the face, not the glass: level with or just above eye line, slightly to the side. That is the whole trick.
